2022 Indian Pursuit Limited Review (My Personal Experience)

On the Interstate Highway System of the United States, grand touring motorcycles are at home. With the 2022 Indian Pursuit Limited, Indian Motorcycle is hoping for just that.  The premier travelers, which are furnished with amenities and outfitted with front fairings, roomy saddlebags, and enormous top boxes, roam from California to the New York Islands like buffalo do on the prairies.

In the past, American OEMs have mainly used liquid-cooled, 60-degree, 108 cubic-inch (1,769cc), big-bore V-twin engines to power these cross-country tourers. However, Indian changed that formula when it released the PowerPlus V-twin. When it made its debut in the 2020 Indian Challenger, the PowerPlus lived up to its name, packing 121 horsepower and 131 lb-ft of torque. With the brand-new Pursuit for 2022, the Minnesota manufacturer brings that powerful mill to the grand touring market.

Indian adds a top box, lower leg fairings, and an electrically adjustable Fox shock to the Challenger frame to enclose the PowerPlus engine. The 2022 Indian Pursuit Limited undoubtedly gives the grand touring formula a twist, but will the tech-forward rookie hold its own against category heavyweights?

2022 Indian Pursuit Limited Engine Characteristics

The V-twin engine that Indian used to launch the PowerPlus in 2019 has more horsepower than any grand touring engine developed in the United States. However, torque wasn’t sacrificed in favor of power by Indian engineers. The PowerPlus’s 11.0:1 compression ratio and 6,500-rpm redline distinguish the liquid-cooled engine inside the 2022 Pursuit Limited. It also has 122 maximum horsepower (at 5,500 rpm) and 128 maximum lb-ft of torque (at 3,800 rpm). With such distinctive features in comparison to its pushrod-actuated competitors, it makes sense that the Pursuit would have a very different engine character.

The PowerPlus does not produce the majority of its power in the lower revs, in contrast to its air-cooled, 45-degree V-twin rivals. Below 3,000 rpm, the Pursuit is actually pretty soft and manageable. At 4,000 rpm and above, it’s a totally different story. With a consistent yet snappy power output that keeps the rider interested, the PowerPlus excels in the mid-range. Within this range, passing power is ideal, but I discovered that the V-sweet twin’s spot is 5,000 rpm.

When shifting through the gears after that point, there is a little increase in power. However, at around 5,000 rpm, the engine is nearly vibration-free, making it ideal for both intense canyon runs and mile-gobbling excursions. The most immediate roll-on response was likewise experienced when cruising at that engine rpm; every stroke of the throttle caused the rear end to squat and the fork legs to lengthen.  I’m not sure what else to look for in an engaging engine if not that.

The PowerPlus V-twin, in contrast to its air-cooled competitors, only gets better as the tachometer needle rises. The engine may not have the same low-down, tractor-like tug that most big-bore V-twin engines are known for, but it makes up for it in the higher register by offering strong pull all the way up to the rev limiter at 6,750 rpm. The PowerPlus is just starting to come into its own when most pushrod V-twins tire out in the mid-range or start to rattle the rider’s teeth. The Pursuit is an exciting introduction to the touring sector because of its combination of performance and practicality, and it is a better long-distance companion as a result.

What Are The 2022 Indian Pursuit Limited Riding Specifics?

The Pursuit is already in the performance category thanks to Indian’s 43 mm USD front end, but the spring-preload adjustable Fox rear shock advances the technology. Users may easily dial the preload settings using the infotainment system that is powered by Ride Command. The Limited trim puts the hidden shock at the rider’s fingertips, whether they are traveling alone or two-up with heavy luggage.

The suspension is incredibly comfortable right out of the box, cushioning the front end with 5.1 inches of travel and the back end with 4.5 inches of travel. On a straight stretch of road, the comfortable ride is ideal, but as soon as the road begins to curve, the soft settings make it difficult to drive quickly. Without suspension modifications, the front end still easily tips in, but the rear shock is hesitant to do the same. As a result, the Pursuit’s tracking precision diminishes, and the tourer occasionally veers slightly off course. The Pursuit regularly bobbled along the curve’s path upon hitting a bump at lean due to the rear’s rebounding movement.

Nevertheless, both problems were fully resolved by adjusting the preload of the rear shock. The rider(sweight )’s and the mass of their luggage can both be adjusted using the 7-inch touchscreen. From there, the Fox shock assumes control and modifies the preload position to accommodate the applied load. With that modification, the chassis was altered, improving straight-line comfort without compromising reaction or support at lean.

The grand tourer sped through the esses, gliding from side to side with a dexterity that belied a motorcycle weighing 912 pounds. Fast and fluid passages maintain that nimble aspect, although heavier braking corner approaches showed the Pursuit’s front master cylinder’s limitations.

However, the axially positioned master cylinder provides a wooden feel and feedback at the lever despite the dual four-piston Brembo brakes clamping down on twin 320mm discs at the fore. Due to this, estimating the rate of braking becomes difficult. Despite the Brembo binders, the initial bite and overall stopping force are both surprisingly gentle. When navigating downhill corners or entering a hairpin after a long straight, it might be challenging to estimate stopping distances.

It is therefore important to add a lot of rear braking, and the two-pot Brembo clamper and 298mm floating rotor aid in reducing the weight. The Pursuit Limited’s chassis is more than capable of handling highway driving and exhilarating canyon excursions, but getting the most out of the premium tourer requires a grasp of the suspension’s advantages and the braking system’s limitations.

2022 Indian Pursuit Limited Accessories

The Indian Challenger has a storage capacity of more than 18 gallons (81.8 liters), but the Pursuit’s new top box almost doubles it to 35.8 gallons (162.75 liters). The spacious cases should hold ample gear for protracted road journeys. The top box, however, could only accommodate my medium-sized Arai Regent-X helmet at an angle, leaving no room for a second cover.

On the move, the cockpit is a comfortable sanctuary thanks to the redesigned lower leg fairings, passenger floorboards, and larger windshield. The windscreen whipped incoming air over the crown of my helmet even in its lowest setting. On its highest level, the electronically adjustable shield completely engulfed the fortress of fairings, allowing little air to pass through. On the highway, such practically impenetrable wind protection significantly reduced tiredness, but in towns with temperatures close to 90 degrees (F), the tall windscreen and lower fairings didn’t allow for appropriate ventilation.

I never used the heated seat during my time with the Pursuit because of the warm weather, but a saddle-mounted control makes using the feature easily. On the other hand, in order to use the multi-level function on the heated grips, the user must browse through the menu screen on the 7-inch TFT. The Indian Ride Command interface includes a full-color touchscreen that, in addition to the settings submenu, also provides navigation, integration with Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth connectivity.

The Pursuit makes it easy to pair your Bluetooth-equipped devices with the system, and it will automatically reconnect each time you turn it on. Riders may control their favorite music while maintaining their attention on the road thanks to controls at the left switchgear. The stereo system produces rich, full sound, but without automatic volume control that takes into account the car’s speed and engine noise, it can be difficult to set the volume at a level that is appropriate for the Interstate and the surrounding metropolis.

Conclusion

That seems to be the 2022 Indian Pursuit Limited’s narrative. The industry-leading technology operated admirably right out of the box, but with feedback from the rider, it truly lives up to its potential. The Pursuit distinguishes itself apart from other V-twin touring bikes built in America because of its liquid-cooled engine and electronically adjustable rear suspension. The Indian Pursuit demonstrates that it is possible to have your cake—or apple pie and ice cream—and eat it too thanks to a smooth engine character and technology that encourages long days in the saddle.

Mihael

Hello there fellow motorcycle enthusiasts; I’m Mihael. The first motorcycle I had was a scooter Gilera vxr 200 from 2003. This is the motorcycle I fell in love with, which brought me into the moto world. Since then, I have been riding many kinds of bikes, from dirt bikes to race bikes. At the moment, I have a Kawasaki Z750 from 2004, and all I can say is that it is a hell of a bike. I have been riding motorcycles for the last 10 years, and during this period, I have been to many locations where I would probably not be without my bike. My goal is to give you the best advice and tips possible that I have been using myself and that all of my biker friends find helpful to them as well.
